Refurbishment of an existing garage as a recreation and fitness room

  • We have recently been asked to upgrade an old garage which was being used for storage space. The trapezoidal site is in north London, where two Victorian terrace houses meet on an open corner. While small, we embraced the project because of the challenges it presents. We also drawn to the idea of a designing a roof with an expressed structure.

Our first challenge was planning. The planners were very sensitive to the corners being open to afford views into the gardens. Designs by previous architects were not granted approval due to the fact that the property is in a conservation area and the views on to the private gardens were obstructed.

We were excited by the prospect of this project and the interesting challenge of designing a roof that would not only substantially improve the use of the space but also it’s spatial qualities.
